When the kids were younger we did a lot of “family quality time” activities. I took them to the public library for story time. We visited community parks and went to the zoo. We hiked and stopped at the scenic points around the island on our way to the beach, the Children’s Discovery Center, the Bishop Museum, Sea Life Park, and whatever other child appropriate activity was having special “family priced” (read free) events.
I made every effort to not just spend quality time with the children, but also just quiet, still, lazing around together time. Time when we just were together. Not rushing from place to place or lesson to lesson or soccer game to volleyball game or gymnastics which, as they have gotten older has gotten more and more difficult to accomplish.
One of those events is gymnastics, and lately it’s been taking its toll on KidI. She has practice four times a week for three hours a day. That means a lot of dedication and time and energy and missed family time. One of the rules of our gym is that gymnast cannot wear nail polish during their competitive season. Well, this year her season ended early because she will not be able to compete in the State Meet. Her highest priority was to get a pedicure. I was not one to disagree. A foot massage is never something I turn down.
KidA and the DH came along because that’s how we roll… as a family… for family quality time!
Sorry KidC (who was at Speech & Debate practice), next time.
